Bunim/Murray Productions Signs Amanda Seales to First-Ever Residency Deal

“Insecure” Star Developing Scripted Series “Amanda Seales Is Difficult” With Banijay-owned Studio. Seales’ Production Company Smart, Funny & Black To Be Housed at Bunim/Murray.

June 15, 2021 – Bunim/Murray Productions (BMP) has signed comedian/actress Amanda Seales and her Smart, Funny & Black production company to its first-ever Residency deal, it was announced today by Julie Pizzi, President, Bunim/Murray Productions.

Seales, who currently stars on HBO’s hit series "Insecure," will develop, produce and potentially star in both scripted and unscripted series with the Banijay-owned studio. The first project to come from the arrangement is scripted series “Amanda Seales is Difficult,” developed by Bunim/Murray Vice-President of Development Myiea Coy and Seales. The series is currently being pitched to potential platforms.

The Residency is a bespoke program designed for talented creators, producers and visionaries who desire the creative services of Bunim Murray to help realize their vision. BMP Residents will have full access to the studio’s development team and production services throughout their tenure with the goal of creating, developing and selling content crafted with their unique POV.

“Amanda was the inspiration for us to create the Residency program, as she embodies the perfect partner for Bunim/Murray—a brilliant comedienne, talented writer, an entrepreneurial producer and a thought provocateur,” says Pizzi. “Amanda is a force of nature in the entertainment industry and our goal is to create a partnership that is advantageous for both her Smart, Funny & Black brand and BMP.”

“This residency with the team at Bunim Murray is a major elevation opportunity for Smart Funny & Black Productions, which has grown from the ground-up, rooted in using comedy to strengthen community,” says Seales. “And what's exciting about working with BMP, is that they’re not only mavericks in the unscripted space, but they’re also actively expanding their slate to other formats. I'm incredibly excited to be a driving force in bringing Black comedic narratives and joyful stories to the screen via my scripted and unscripted projects that span from competition formats to talking head and to whatever other dopeness the SFB/BMP squad and I drum up!”

Seales currently stars as “Tiffany DuBois” on HBO’s hit series "Insecure" and recently hosted her own HBO stand up special, “I Be Knowin.” She formerly co-hosted the daytime talk show "The Real," hosted NBC’s "Bring the Funny" and recently handled hosting duties for the ground-breaking 2020 BET Awards.

Seales, who holds a master’s degree in African American studies from Columbia University, hosts a weekly podcast, “Small Doses” and has written a book by the same name. She is also the creator and host of the touring, and now virtual, variety game show “Smart, Funny & Black” and just launched a membership community app, “SFB Society.”

Bunim/Murray Productions, which was originally founded in 1987, is behind such ground-breaking unscripted series as "The Real World," "Road Rules," "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" and "The Challenge." Earlier this year, Paramount+ debuted "The Real World Homecoming: New York" and "The Challenge: All Stars," while Facebook recently launched the studio’s "Sway Life" and "House of Creators." Bunim/Murray is also rebooting competition series "Don’t Forget The Lyrics" for FOX and just launched Spanish language game "Cazatesoros" in Mexico on TV Azteca with Endemol Shine Boomdog and Korean studio CJ ENM.
