April 26, 2022 — New Banijay-owned production label Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic has locked in its initial slate of original programming, hired its first staff members and is set to open its Mexico City-based offices/studios space, it was announced today by Managing Director Marie Leguizamo.
To kick off its first year, Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic has signed a deal with global superstar Becky G to produce an unscripted docu-series following emerging all-female Latin group ANGEL22. The project will be co-produced with 2WS Films and Becky G will serve as an executive producer and also appear in the untitled series.
Additionally, the studio is set to produce the next season of hit Amazon Original series “LOL: Last One Laughing” (LOL) in Mexico for Prime Video. And Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic is also creating a Latin American production hub for “LOL” that will be based in Mexico City and overseen by Leguizamo, who has served as executive producer/showrunner for the last three seasons of the Mexico edition of “LOL.”
Leguizamo has also hired the first members of her team, including veteran unscripted producer Andrea Hülsz, who has been named Executive Director, Physical Production. Miguel Sanchez will serve as Director of Development and Fernanda Ruiz is Manager of Development.
“Since we first announced the creation of Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic late last year, we’ve hit the ground running and I couldn’t be more excited about our initial slate of programming, the tremendous talent we are in business with including Becky G and the experienced team that we have assembled,” says Leguizamo. “There is a tremendous demand for high-quality, original content in this marketplace and we are 100% focused on creating series that will resonate with audiences of all ages.”
Later this month, Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic will open its first offices and studio space in Mexico City’s Polanco district. The studio, which was officially unveiled last September, is based both in Mexico City and at Banijay Americas’ Los Angeles headquarters. It is focused on developing and producing original content in both Spanish and English for broadcast, cable and streamers in the Mexican and U.S. Hispanic markets.
Last September, Banijay Americas announced it was launching the studio to be led by multiple-Emmy nominated producer Leguizamo, who has served as an executive producer for top unscripted series for the company over the last decade. In 2019, Leguizamo signed an overall development and executive producer deal with Banijay-owned and Mexico City-based studio Endemol Shine Boomdog.
Leguizamo recently wrapped executive producing the third and fourth seasons of Boomdog and Amazon Original’s “Last One Laughing Mexico” with Eugenio Derbez and she has also served as the showrunner/EP on such Spanish-language hit series as “La Voz Kids” for Telemundo, “Pequeños Gigantes USA” and “Mira Quien Baila” for Univision.
Hülsz joins Leguizamo from fellow Banijay-owned studio Endemol Shine Boomdog, where she spent the last ten years of her career producing some of the top-rated series in the region. Hülsz most recently served as an Executive Producer for Boomdog, working on such series as “Big Brother,” “Nailed It Mexico” (Netflix), “LOL Mexico” (Amazon) and scripted series “Nicky Jam: El Ganador” (Netflix).
Sanchez joins Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic from CMF Media, a production company he co-founded. He previously developed formats for Cristina Palacio’s production company Alibi. And Ruiz is a writer, producer, podcaster, and now manager of development for Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic. In 2015, Ruiz co-founded Kaptura Projects, a studio focused on developing and producing original content projects.
