Endemol Shine Boomdog, BTF Media and Sony Music Spain Developing Drama Based on Life of Famed Spanish Musician Joaquin Sabina

January 23, 2019—Endemol Shine Boomdog, BTF Media and Sony Music Spain are teaming up to develop an original drama series and together with Reposado Productions, a separate documentary based on the life of famed Spanish musician Joaquin Sabina to be released in 2020.

Acclaimed director and screenwriter Fernando Leon de Aranoa, known for award-winning Spanish films such as “Barrio” and “Mondays In The Sun” (“Los lunes al sol”), will co-produce and direct the documentary. And Leon de Aranoa is currently in discussions to join the drama series, as well.

Endemol Shine Boomdog, BTF Media and Sony Music Spain will jointly produce the scripted series and together with Leon de Aranoa’s Reposado Productions, produce a documentary based on Sabina, the celebrated Spanish singer-songwriter, poet and painter.

Oriol Uria, CEO of BTF Media Spain, stated, “Since day one while working with Sony Music Spain to make a Sabina project, something changed in my life. That is Sabina’s magic. Sabina is not only a huge artist, but with no doubts, he is also a generous human being,” says Uria. “To have Endemol Shine Boomdog accepting our invitation to join us in such a special project has been not only an honor, but also, has made this journey even more exciting”. Uria adds that, “Sometimes life is generous in presents and Fernando joining the project was an exceptional one of these. It is an extraordinary experience being able to enjoy seeing such artists like Sabina and Fernando working together.”

“We are thrilled to partner with BTF Media and Sony Music Spain to tell the amazing life story of Joaquin Sabina through an original dramatic series and also with a documentary,” says Endemol Shine Boomdog CEO Alejandro Rincon. “And it is great to have such an acclaimed director, producer and screenwriter as Fernando joining us on this journey. Fernando’s extraordinary experience and his close relationship with Joaquin make him the perfect addition.”

Jose Maria Barbat, President of Sony Music Spain stated, “Joaquín Sabina is one of the key artists of Sony, with a career hard to match in our country and throughout the region. We had to develop a project with him, especially in his 70th anniversary. We are thrilled to celebrate with him.” He also added, “For years we have been working with the idea of developing a documentary that is now happily joined by the bio pic project. We are excited about both projects that will surely leverage Joaquín’s life in a new way: to bring his work to new audiences along with his longtime fans, by means of new platforms and with the best possible partners. This is an excellent project that confirms the bet of the company for the original content of the highest quality. I would like to personally thank Joaquín for his confidence in approaching a project of this magnitude and Sergi and Oriol for the passion and affection they have placed in him.”

Sergi Reitg, Content Director of Sony Music Spain joined Barbat In his celebration: “Since I took on the challenge of launching the Premium Content area for Sony Music Spain, the main objective was to develop, among others, bio pics on top-level artists, with an international focus (especially for Spanish speaking audiences), with the highest production quality and with the best partners in the sector. The bio pic of Joaquín Sabina is the ideal project for this objective and the type of productions that we are going to develop in the upcoming years at Sony Music Spain. I am also happy that Joaquín and his team have been fully involved in the project from the very beginning.”

Sabina, one of the most influential singer-songwriters in modern Spanish history was born in Ubeda, Spain in 1949. In 1970, he was exiled to London for political reasons and remained there for seven years. When he returned to Spain after Franco’s death, Sabina started playing in small pubs in Madrid and then recorded his first record, “Inventario.” Sabina quickly rose to become a big star in both Spain and across Latin America and he’s released more than 20 albums selling millions of copies during his illustrious career. His album “19 Days and 500 Nights” sold over one million copies alone.

Sabina’s life story features many different elements—romantic love, passion, forbidden love, strong emotions, danger, all types of excess, friendship with unknown and marginal people, friendship with remarkable personalities, a profound love for freedom and most of all—living life his own way. As a consequence of living on the wild side, Sabina suffered a debilitating stroke in 2001, which nearly cost him his life. He has since recovered and gotten back to work, touring and launching his latest álbum, “I Deny Everything.”

Madrid native Leon de Aranoa has compiled an impressive body of work across both film and television, winning numerous accolades along the way. His ground-breaking 2002 film, “Mondays in the Sun,” which starred Javier Bardem, won the Concha de Oro award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and five Goya awards.

In 1998, Leon de Aranoa wrote and directed the film “Barrio,” a portrait of the lives of three young adolescents in a poor Spanish neighborhood. The film was presented at the San Sebastian Festival, where Leon de Aranoa obtained the Silver Shell award for best director. “Barrio” also received numerous other honors, including The Fipresci Prize, the Fotogramas de plata for best Spanish film, the José María Forqué prize, the Sant Jordi and the Turia, among others. His recent films include ‘Princesses’ (2005), ‘Invisibles’ (2007), ‘Amador’ (2010), “A Perfect Day” (2015) and “Loving Pablo” (2017). Leon de Aranoa got his start working as a scriptwriter on Spanish TV, working on such series as ‘Un, dos, tres…responda otra vez’ and comedy sketches for “Martes y Trece.”
